About SETMA - SETMA's Mission

SETMA's mission statement is:

To build a multi-specialty clinic in Southeast Texas which is worthy of the trust of every patient who seeks our help with their health, and to promote excellence in healthcare delivery by example.

(The origin of this mission statement is worth noting.  In October of 1997, two of the co-founding partners of SETMA attended the Medical Group Management Association’s (MGMA) annual meeting in Washington, D.C.  Drs. Mark Wilson and James L. Holly also attended a one- day, pre-conference on “strategic planning.”  As the two left one session, Dr. Wilson, addressing Dr. Holly, commented, “You know, Larry, our goals may not be the same.”

SETMA had only been founded two years and two months before and while we were gratified by how much we had accomplished, as evidenced by the dialogue which had taken place in this pre-conference, we were still feeling our way along in personal relationships and team building.

In response to his comment Dr. Holly said to Dr. Wilson, “Mark, you may be right; what is your goal?”   After Dr. Wilson stated his goals, Dr. Holly opened his notebook and showed him a statement outlined in bold ink.  The statement incredibly was word for word what Dr. Wilson had said.  At that moment, we knew that our mission was clear and that the future of SETMA was secure.  SETMA has never deviated from this mission statement’s spirit and intent.)

History

Southeast Texas Medical Associates, LLP was formed in 1995 by Drs. Holly and Wilson to develop a practice through which they and other healthcare providers could continue to provide quality, private healthcare to their patients and to Southeast Texas in the changing healthcare environment, which is increasingly dominated by managed care. SETMA, LLP is also intended to provide a means for interacting synergistically with managed care to:

  • Maintain the health of our patients
  • Maintain quality of life for our patients
  • And, to do this is in a cost-effective way

SETMA is committed to

  • Maintaining the traditional physician-patient relationship -- No matter who is paying for the patient's care, or even if no one is paying for it, SETMA is committed to providing the best care possible for everyone who seeks attention through any of its clinics or facilities. Fundamental to this commitment is our recognition that patients are individuals who are not defined by their illness but by their hopes, dreams, fears, ambitions, desires and personhood. SETMA providers recognize and embrace the humanity of each patient they care for.
  • Providing tools for the accomplishment of these goals -- SETMA is committed to providing all providers with the technology and knowledge-base with which to fulfill the motto: healthcare where your health is the only care. Via electronic patient records, SETMA makes it possible to bring the latest knowledge and treatment to bear on every patient encounter.
  • Assisting patients in maintaining health at the highest possible level -- Moving from an old model of healthcare where the physician was the constable attempting to impose care upon the patient, SETMA has adopted the role of counselor and collaborator with patients to enable them to achieve the health they have chosen to have. This philosophy is founded upon the principle that patients are responsible for making good decisions about their health, both in life-styles and in treatment choices.
  • Providing these services in a professional environment -- Professionalism means dignity, respect and compassion. Each of these is the goal of SETMA providers with every patient they see regardless of any characteristic which may distinguish an individual patient from another.

SETMA's Motto: Healthcare where your health is the only care! This motto means that we will treat the patient with the best science and the best medicine no matter what the circumstances of the patient and particularly without regard to the patient's financial resources.
