In my first year of medical school, (1969), I became the director of a health careers program for minority students.

That year, I also was elected as National Chairman of a new student program, the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) - the accrediting body for undergraduate (Schools of medicine)and graduate medical education - (residencies).

The OSR still exists and the AAMC website lists all the former Chairmen. I served two years because I served the organizational year and then the first year of the organization’s existence.

For two years I was a voting member of the AAMC’s Executive Committee.  Both years, I voted on the accreditation of my medical school, UT Health San Antonio School  of Medicine.

In 1971, my Dean was fired.  In that I knew the truth about his dismissal, I wrote the Chancellor and Regents and sent a copy of my letter to the San Antonio Express News.  The chancellor and I both knew that he had not told the truth about Dean F. Carter Pannill.  The newspaper published my actions as a front page article.

Over several weeks Don Dale a renowned artist creates the editorial cartoons which appear below.  One day I saw the originals on his desk. When he told me he was going to discard them, I asked for them.  My son still has the originals in his home.

50 years later, at my retirement dinner, the President of UT Health San Antonio told the story of my interaction with the Chancellor of the University of Texas System and the regents.  You can listen to or read Dr Henrich’s address at the following link.
