Have you ever wanted to do something for 45 years and then doing it?

In August, 1969, Carolyn and I moved to San Antonio when I began medical school.  From then until now, for 51 years, Interstate 10 has been frequently traversed by us as we visited Carolyn’s family in Baton  Rouge.

As we traveled through Beaumont, and, for the past 45 years, from Beaumont, the last road sign before the Neches River states, Rose City, One Mile.

Certainly, since we moved to Beaumont forty-five years ago, the Rose City exit which is almost at the eastern end of the Neches River bridge has always caught my attention.

Today, after having lunch, Carolyn and I intended to drive to Holly Beach, Louisiana, to the ferry at  Cameron, Louisiana, and back to Beaumont via I-10.

When we left the restaurant, where we had lunch, I turned north instead of south.  Carolyn notice this and commented.  I answered, we’re going to Rose City.

It was amazing. after we exited I-10, we saw that the side road was Old Hwy 90.  After turning on to the first road, in less than a mile, we came to a barricade. We could go no further. I drove up to the guard’s shack and told a man that I wanted to document what we had done.

A charming lady with a big smile came out and I told her this story. Smiling widely and laughing, she turned back after saying, “You have made my day!”

We went down several narrow roads and enjoyed looking at the houses, woods and water bodies.  We then drove down Old Hwy 90.  At the Rose City exit Old Hwy 90 was parallel to I-10.

As we drove to Vidor, the Old Hwy 90 angled away from I-10.

What a wonderful exploration.  We will go again to take pictures.
