The Evolution of a University's Name

The Medical School in San Antonio's Name has undergone several iterations

1.  In 1959, House Bill 9 established the South Texas Medical School.

2. In 1967, the Legislature changed the name to The University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio.

3. In 1972, the institution with its multiple schools became The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  Today the name of the medical school is The University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio.  The official/regental name of the institution remains The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

4. In 2008, the Dean of the Medical School changed the name to: UTHSCSASOM -- University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, School of Medicine

5. In 2016, the name was changed to: UT Health San Antonio School of Medicine.  New logos do reflect the name UT Health San Antonio School of Medicine.

6.  February 14, 2017, the name of the School of Medicine was formally changed to The Joe R. And Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, a name of which we are all proud.

The Name:

UT Health San Antonio Joe R. And Teresa Lozano Long School Of Medicine

History

The first full class of students which went all four years at the San Antonio campus was the 1973 Graduating Class which began classes in September, 1969. That is my class. This May, that class will celebrate the 44th anniversary of graduation and 48 years since we started our first year of medical school.

By whatever name the school is known and/or referred to, I am proud to have been snd to still be a part of this noble organization.
