Dr. Henrich:

I have just received my copy of Henrich ‘s Principles and Practice of Dialysis Fifth Edition.   After reading the kind note from you, I have read through parts of the book.  The wealth of knowledge and the depth of scholarship are staggering.   What a contribution to healthcare!

Dr. Henrich’s Note Placed in the Front of his book:

“11-4-17

“Dear Larry -

“Happy Birthday!  Here is a gift for your library you don’t have to read.  You are a special friend and a remarkable doctor.  And I hope when you see the book, it will remind you of our friendship and your bond to your grateful alma mater.  Bill”

There is no place in medicine where medical ethics - with the balance between technology and humanity - are as clearly seen as in the modern practice of dialysis.  There is no place where the value our society places on a human life is more clearly seen than in the modern practice of dialysis.

Years ago, when we placed an expensive cardiac device in a prisoner, I told him, “There is no other nation on earth that would spend $100,000 on the preservation of your life.  Now, as the Priest told Jean Val Jean in Les Miserable, ‘With this silver, you must become an honest man.’”

I am proud of a nation which invests the value we do in the individual, particularly as seen in dialysis.

I am proud of the contribution which the President of my School of Medicine has made to  the science of medicine and to the education of practitioners of the science and art of medicine.

Thank you, Dr. Henrich.  This book will be a permanent part of my library.  It  will be proudly displayed where I can often comment to my colleagues about its namesake.   While I do not practice dialysis, chronic renal disease is a part of my daily practice and I have dozens of patients on dialysis.  From time to time, I will read parts of this book.

With gratitude and affection,

Sincerely Yours,

James (Larry) Holly, M.D.

To: James L. Holly;

Larry,  Thank you for your very kind and beautiful note.    I am flattered by your personal kindness in responding this way.   You truly are such a shining example of the best qualities a physician should aspire to reflect.    With great respect and admiration,  Bill
