1968-2018 University of Texas Health, San Antonio Lozano School of Medicine's 50th Anniversary approaches next year.

The picture below is of my medical-school-acceptance letter, which I received in November 1968.  It is signed by Dean Carter Pannill who greatly influenced my life.  Its preservation is due to the foresight of my wife who framed it as a gift.

The celebration of the 50th Anniversary begins this year with the annual gala to be held this September. The announcement follows:

 June 17, 2017

Dear Carolyn and Larry,

This fall, we are delighted to honor Lacie and Joe Gorder at our 2017 UT Health San Antonio President’s Gala - Passion, Purpose, Promise, on Saturday, September 23, 2017, 6:30 p.m., at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio.  This year’s gala will launch the 50th anniversary of UT Health San Antonio, as our celebratory year of 2018 approaches.

Over our first 50 years, we have improved the health of our community, state, and nation through innovation in medical research, excellence in health education, and dedication to clinical care.

Over our next 50 years, we will continue to work with passion and purpose to fulfill our promise to create a healthier tomorrow for all.

As in previous years, we anticipate a wonderful attendance from our community, with more than 1,000 guests expected at the 2017 President’s Gala.  Proceeds from the Gala will establish an endowment in honor of Lacie and Joe Gorder designated to support a program aligned with my Presidential priorities and the UT Health mission.

I am writing to personally invite you to join Mary and me as Co-Chairs of this year’s Gala.  As Co-Chairs, we hope your schedule will allow you to attend the Gala and support our honorees by considering a table sponsorship for the evening or a gift to the Gorder endowment.  Gala Co-Chairs will be listed on the Gala stationery and in the Gala event program and you also will enjoy special seating at the evening’s Head Table or, if you prefer, at your own adjacent sponsored table, where you may personally host your invited guests.

Thank you in advance for considering this invitation on behalf of Lacie and Joe.  Mary and I hope to hear back soon that you will be able to accept our invitation to be 2017 President’s Gala Co-Chairs and join us for this grand event.  We promise you a memorable evening and the opportunity to be part of UT Health San Antonio’s legacy by supporting our unique mission to make lives better - for us all.  Thank you for your friendship and support.

Sincerely,
Bill Henrich

My note to Dr. Henrich June 17, 2017

Dr. Henrich, after receiving the invitation to the annual gala, and after reading how it begins the 2018, 50th Anniversary celebration of UT Health, I realized that my career spans all 50 years.

Below is a picture of my 1968 acceptance letter which Carolyn framed for me.  Recently, we visited Waco and went by 2623 Bosque.   We were not living at that address when my letter of acceptance arrived.

I was in class at Baylor when a fellow student said to me, "I hear you are going to be a doctor."   The Pre-Med Advisor at Baylor, a remarkable man, Dr. Virgil Tweedy, had received a copy of the letter.

Immediately, I knew where the letter was.  I went to 2623 Bosque and stood at the mail box. I knew my letter was in that box, but I also knew that it was illegal for me to open that mail box.  No one was home.

For the only time and for the last time to my knowledge, I intentionally broke a Federal Law.  I opened the box.   In it was my future.

As the UT Health Long School of Medicine celebrates 50 years, Carolyn and I will remember.  We have been greatly blessed beyond our imagination.  As students, I always said that Carolyn and I were in Medical School, and so we were.

We are now in our 45th year of practicing medicine.  Everyday, I am grateful for the privilege given to me on November 22, 1968.
