Subject: RE: Brundage Medical Group (BMG) introduction to SETMA

As I drove to our clinic in Lumberton, Texas, it occurred to me that we have strong evidence to support our claims of the efficience, effective and excellent use of hospital resources.  In 2011, SETMA was asked by RTI International to allow our data to be uses in a study commissioned by the CMS to contrast Patient-Centered Medical Home practices (SETMA and 311 others) and not coordinated practices (312) to evaluation cost, quality and coordination.  I think I have told you that SETMA is the ONLY practice in American which as all four accreditations for medical home:  NCQA, AAAHC, URAC and Joint Commission.

We did so with some trepidation because we had never seen our Fee-for-Service Medicare cost.  The result for SETMA which is for FFS Medicare 2008-2009-2010 can be reviewed at http://jameslhollymd.com/In-The-News/pdfs/Medical-Home-Feedback-Reports-SETMA-II-102011.pdf.  This is for ALL costs - inpatient, specialty, outpatient, nursing home, emergency department, etc.

SETMA’s cost was 37.4% below the practice benchmarked against us.  Our inpatient cost was lower, our emergency department cost was lower and the estimation of preventable readmissions and avoidable emergency department cost was lower.

You may find it interesting, in learning more about SETMA’s patient-care management, to review these results.
