Introduction of James L. Holly, MD, Empowering Future Physicians Conference: American Student Medical Association University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio School of Medicine October 21, 2012 San Antonio, Texas

My name is Leo Lopez III. I am from Rio Grande City, Texas and currently a second year medical student here at the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Medicine. As acting Board Director for region IV of the American Medical Student Association, it gives me great honor to introduce our keynote speaker.

Our presenter is a man that has spent his life influencing physicians in training by the thousands, impacting patients by the masses and inspiring human kind through word and deed. This man is the Chief Executive Officer of the Southeast Texas Medical Association, an Adjunct Professor at the UTHSCSA School of Medicine, and a Clinical Associate professor at Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Medicine. He has produced countless publications, and his words have been echoed through the halls spanning our great nation.

He completed his medical education right here at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio and this year is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. His devotion to advancing the human condition and educating the future providers of medicine is evident in his tremendous endowments to our institution, conviction in his words, and his revolutionizing efforts in making the patient the center of the health care model.

Though, his accomplishments reign in the realm of health care, I would liken them to that of construction work. Dr. James Holly has laid a strong foundation necessary to advance the current state of medicine. A foundation necessary to up hold human dignity. A foundation necessary to prevent the most inhumane acts of inequality as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would agree, health care injustice.

Upon this foundation, Dr. Holly has laid brick by brick to construct a community that has increased access to care. Brick by brick to empower each patient to participate in their care. Each brick interlocking with one another symbolizes the coordination of care across providers. Dr. Holly also gives physicians in training the tools to construct after this model. He gives us the tools for the future. The tools to rebuild our failing health care system. And if it wasn’t enough, he is also responsible for the construction of the roof over our heads, as this is the Dr. James Holly Auditorium.

Yes, quite a career in construction and without any further a due, I am humbled to present - Dr. James L. Holly.
